One of the three arborescent Madagascan species, this is the famous and very well known "Madagascar Palm".

During the plant boom of the 1970's, it was grown in the tens of thousands all across the U.S. and Europe and today a well grown specimen still commands attention.

These particular plants were grown from seed collected from a small localized population near Ihosy Madagascar where it develops a fat bottle shaped trunk much more pronounced than is typical for this species. Grow it tight in a small container and the fat trunk will soon form like those in our photo which are only six inches tall but are in three inch pots.
