Shipping plants safely is a difficult process because THEY ARE HIGHLY PERISHABLE. Succulents in particular are much more fragile than most other types of plants and therefore must be prepared and packed with the utmost care.

We care about you and the plants and no effort is spared to deliver your order in perfect condition. We ourselves have received many shipments of rare and valuable plants that were obviously very good quality but didn't survive poor shipping methods. What a terrible waste! For most species, it takes us years not months to produce a saleable plant and we are quite respectful of our investment.

IF IT SOUNDS LIKE WE MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT SHIPPING, WE DO!

Shipping Charges

  • All orders are shipped by Federal Express. We do not use US Postal Service or UPS.

  • All shipments are sent by air (either 2 day, overnight, or express saver) not ground.

  • Your order will arrive on Tuesday-Friday and will not be in transit over the weekend.

  • Shipping charges are listed on our summer shipping page and the online catalog.

  • We do everything possible to keep shipping charges at the bare minimum without sacrificing the safety of your plants. Highland charges only for expenses incurred, not for profit.

Our Method

We have eliminated the number one reason customers fail with succulents that are shipped: we send nothing bare root!

All plants are shipped potted. This means that all of our work to produce a nice healthy plant is not thrown away by tearing the roots apart and scrubbing them dry. This is especially important for rare slow growing species as they will often fail when subjected to such treatment. Your plants will take right off and show little stress from shipping and they will give you years of pleasure by getting off to a good start. This really does make a huge difference.

There is quite a bit of work involved in preparing your order. This is why we cannot ship your plants immediately. In most cases we need 7-10 days.

Your plants are pulled right away and moved to our shipping greenhouse where they are carefully monitored to reduce soil moisture to levels correct for shipping. Wet succulents cannot be put in a closed shipping carton and be expected to arrive in good condition. Your order then goes from our shipping greenhouse to packing the same day it is shipped to you. Plants are never left for days in a dark shipping room to deteriorate only to arrive in poor condition. You won't believe how fresh they will look.

One extra advantage of ordering from us is that you don't have to worry about having plants that are dormant sent bare root. Succulents can be confusing as to which genera are winter or summer dormant and plants that are dormant and shipped bare root are in most cases very difficult to establish and usually fail. You can safely order anything from us anytime.
